2016 Cabernet Sauvignon / Shiraz
Fondly known as ‘The Great Australian Red’ McLeish Estate 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon Shiraz is a unique Australian blend of 80% Cabernet Sauvignon (traditional Bordeaux varietal) and 20% Shiraz (traditional Rhone varietal). The blend exhibits vibrant currants and cranberry aromas. Rich layered, black cherry fruit with underlying earthy, cedar and leafy herbs completes the structure. Long and persistent, with a fine tannin and impeccable balance.
The Hunter Valley experienced some early rain which delayed the start of harvest to early February. The hand harvesting process was carried out to select only the most premium fruit, therefore lower yields where seen. The Cabernet Sauvignon was harvested on the 23rd of February and Shiraz was hand harvested on the 14th of February with the optimal conditions prevailing with long warmer days, leading to excellent ripeness and primary fruit characters.
Our Shiraz vineyard was established in 1985 with the vines being hand harvested. Cropping is undertaken- thus ensuring low yields and high quality and intensely flavored fruit. The vineyard soil is quite typical of the Hunter Valley with a mixture of sandy loam and red volcanic clay .
