Tasting Notes

The McLeish Estate Reserve Shiraz encapsulates the essence of the Hunter Valley and our own winemaking style. The aromas of rich mulberry and spicy blackberries are perfectly balanced with the complex spice, floral and violet overtones to the blackberry and plum fruit at the core of the palate. The ripe but refined tannins and quality oak complete an outstanding example of Hunter Valley Shiraz.

Good early season rain followed a very early budburst in late August with even growing conditions continuing until Christmas. Ripening commenced in mid December and with the very low seasonal crop levels the harvest was the earliest for decades.

All major varietals were picked before the first rains in late January. Our Shiraz blocks were picked with great colour and structure at over 14Be.

Cropping levels for Shiraz were 0.5 to 1.5 tonnes/acre and we expect the wines to be classics

Our Shiraz vineyard was established in 1985 with the vines being hand harvested. Continuously creating outstanding fruit each year, the vineyard soil is quite typical of the Hunter Valley with a mixture of sandy loam and red volcanic clay.

Our expression of Shiraz is crafted to display primary fruit vibrancy and lean acidity in its youth, while cellaring into the next 10 years will reward with the developing added complexity and supple tannins.
